A smart lawyer had been bullyragging the witness in a laundry case. Finally he asked: "How long have you been getting your washing done at this place?"

"Ever since your mother died," answered the witness.

"What do you mean, sir?" asked the lawyer, firing up.

"Just what I say, sir," calmly replied the witness.

"Do you mean to insinuate that my mother ever did your washing? You - you - "

"No; I mean just what I say. Your mother died six years ago. Since then I have had my washing done at this laundry."

Then the witness was allowed to step down amid the giggles of the multitude.
