The New Dominion

There are 229 prisoners in the Penitentiary at Moundsville, from this State. All but seven counties are represented, those being Clay, Hancock, Morgan, McDowell, Nicholas, Pocahontas and Wirt. Kanawha has the largest representation, there being 21 prisoners from that county. Marion has 8; Monongalia, 7; Marshall 2; Wetzel, 4, and Harrison, 8. During the two years ending November 30th last there have been received 194 State prisoners, and during the same period 129 have been discharged by reason of expiration of term. 34 have received pardons from the Governor, 19 have died in prison and one escaped. The labor of the convicts during the last six months amounted to $8,535.20. The entire receipts during that time were $10,076.95, and the expenses of the institution $16,780.16; expenses over receipts, $4,703.10. - Fairmont Index.
