A whig correspondent of the New York Journal of Commerce, in a long letter on the prospects of the election in Pennsylvania, endeavors to show up the great advantages of Porter the democratic candidate, and the disadvantages of Ritner the federal candidate, and is evidently preparing the minds of the whigs for a Waterloo defeat. He insists that "it cannot be said that there is anything like a fair issue made in regard to the policy of the general government,"—admits that Ritner had the "advantage of the control of the votes of the laborers employed on the public works," and concludes with expressing the belief that the new constitution has been adopted by the people in default of the opposition, and if so, that "whoever is now elected Governor will wield a barren sceptre, for he will be deprived of the whole of his heretofore immense patronage."
He says "the whigs expected to gain four representatives to Congress including Mr Sutherland, conservative, making in all fifteen anti-sub-Treasury members,—but that is already out of the question;" also,—"that the Whigs expected to hold their own in the Senate and to have a majority of ten in the lower House, but this too is now out of the question." And the best he can hope for, on the part of the whigs is that, "the parties will be nearly equally divided in the legislature, but it is hoped that the whigs will have a majority in joint ballot." The only "reliance" of the whigs, in regard to Governor he says is upon "their strong holds in the West, in case Porter should pass the mountains with a majority, which it appears probable that he will." So much for the present prospects of Whiggery in Pennsylvania. This we think, is as much as to say "give it up."
