The Canadians are engaging in warm discussion these days over the suggestion that the Dominion should have a flag of her own. The Union Jack, as the standard of the Empire, will, of course, continue to be Canada's so long as she is British. But as a growing and virile nation, the Canadians think their country should possess a distinctively Canadian emblem which would include the beloved Union Jack, and, at the same time, be individual and original.
The most popular design for a new Canadian flag puts the Union Jack in the upper corner and, in the field. the Maple Leaf, or a cluster of them. The beaver has also been suggested for the central figure, but most people favor the national flower.
There is also a large element strongly opposed to any flag at all, save the good old Union Jack. The Orange Order is especially hostile to the notion of a Canadian flag.
