The Connecticut Election

The copperheads appear to be wonderfully jubilant over the recent election in Connecticut. They take good care however to conceal the fact that although they have elected their candidate for Governor, they have lost very heavily in the Legislature. The Republican majority in the Legislature last year was only eleven. this year it was increased to fifty. Not much in that for Copperheads to rejoice over, especially as this result secures the election of a Republican U. S. Senator. Is not the election of a sound union republican to the U. S. Senate for a term of six years, far greater cause for exultation than would have been the simple election of a Governor for a single year? We think so, and should be very sorry to see the result reversed.

The Hartford Courant tells us how the State was carried for English on the popular vote:

"It is not the work of the lawful citizens of the State. No sane and honest man familiar with political statistics believes that the lawful voters of Hartford gave 656 or New Haven 2,253 majority or Mr. English. The two capital cities gave 2,916 for the sham democracy. Without them, the State would be republican by at least 1,600. Wherever vice, ignorance and intemperance most prevail, wherever on our borders or in the large cities the best facilities are afforded for colonization and fraud, there the democratic party has made its gains."

The fraud in New Haven is most shameless. In Hartford, in the afternoon, the money of the opposition appeared, and with it men whom no one knew, to vote upon every remaining name on the list. New London, Windham, Middlesex and Hartford counties gained, but little Tolland takes the banner for the largest absolute and very far the largest proportionate gain.

The General Assembly remains in the hands of the Union Republican party, and probably by a considerably increased majority. On this portion of the hotly contested field, the victory is glorious, and will give satisfaction to loyal men throughout the nation. The voice of Connecticut in the Senate will not be divided and nullified. A sound Union Republican will be sent to stand with General Ferry representing the fidelity of the real Connecticut to Liberty and Union.

It is hardly necessary to say that we still entertain no doubt that Connecticut will vote for Grant in November. The ex-bounty jumpers and "repeaters" who have been hired to perjure themselves will be needed in New York, whence most of them came, and the disgrace of the two defeats will assuredly arouse the honor and Christian patriotism of the State to a new and irresistible campaign. "On this line we shall fight it out all summer."
