MASSACHUSETTS ELECTION.
If the Federalists shall have succeeded in this Election, their triumph must be such as would have been that of Satan, had he been successful in his warfare with Heaven. Of all the abominable and diabolical arts which ever men or devils employed, the most vile have been selected to aid them, on this occasion. Gross and absolute falsehoods have been joined to mean and pitiful misrepresentations, to eke out the measure of Federal iniquity. The more improbable and libellous the tale, the more eagerly has it been circulated by these imps of delusion. Treachery has been enlisted in their service; and private petulance wheedled into an alliance with them. Should they succeed in their wishes, then, a thousand serpents of remorse must twine in their wreath of triumph.
On the other hand, Should the Republicans prevail, the fairness of the means pursued will add a zest to their rejoicings. Having placed the question on the ground of principle, a decision will be bottomed on a fair and firm basis. Their present success will prove the earnest of future security. They will have the satisfaction to reflect; that they framed no lying tales to raise personal prejudices--that they circulated no libellous statements to excite personal jealousy: That they descended to no mean and despicable tricks to cajole some individual of their adversaries, and to transform him into their dupe. They can exult in the recollection, that the means employed were as pure, as the end will be prosperous.
