Richest Nickel
Deposits Found
Near Juneau

By LOUIS R. HUBER

SEATTLE, Aug. 15—One of the richest nickel-cobalt-copper veins discovered anywhere in recent years apparently has been struck at Funter Bay, near Juneau.

That is the report here of mining men associated with the Funter Bay prospect. An exploratory drift, or tunnel, pushed 500 feet into the mountainside recently, has fully confirmed rich ore values indicated by previous diamond drilling from the surface, they say.

Gold and silver ore also is contained in the vein.

The nickel exploration is being done by the Admiralty-Alaska Gold Mining Company on a $112,000 loan from the Defense Minerals Exploration Administration.

The work has been under the direction of the U.S. Bureau of Mines.

S. H. Lorain of the Bureau of Mines office in Juneau has gone to Funter Bay to examine the new nickel strike. He will make recommendations as to further work.

Because the United States is 'poor' in nickel ore, the DMEA lists all nickel exploration as highly strategic and requires only ten percent financial participation by private companies.

Mining experts here say it is quite possible for the Funter Bay deposit to turn into large-scale production soon.
