Before five Filipino field laborers could complete a deal to increase their earnings by duplicating wage tickets issued by their employer, they were arrested by Sheriff Robert W. Ware and two of his deputies, Frank Raney and Pete Klyne.
Sencio Vergaro Cardenas, Laureano Tualla, Adolfo Baclig, Ascadio Beado Pascua, and Basilio Piscardor were held in the county jail Wednesday in lieu of $1000 bail. They were charged with forgery.
While employed by J. C. Lopez, labor contractor, to work in the H. P. Garin carrot fields near El Centro the islanders ordered two rolls of tickets matching those Lopez issued the workmen, the officers said. Each ticket on the rolls could be cashed for 60 cents. In some places in northern California merchants accept them as cash. Each roll contained $600 worth of tickets.
With a fake punch, the islanders told the officers, they planned to mark the fake tickets to match the authentic ones issued by Lopez, a registered, bonded labor contractor.
They expected the fakes would be good as gold, they said.
