Full Text

The entire failure of the last eastern mail prevents our being enabled to lay before our readers any confirmation of the Spanish news which we this day publish. The human mind is too apt to be sanguine in the belief of that which is hoped for. But the circumstances which have attended the Armada of that government, long since concentrated at Cadiz, and which was destined for the royal cause in South America, justifies the expectation that a revolution is at least in embryo. The birth and maturity of such an event would be a joyful benediction to millions of enslaved fellow creatures. The tyrannic power of Ferdinand would be vanquished—the cruel, barbarous and inhuman Inquisition would be destroyed—South America would be freed from turmoils and slavery—and a different state of things, in other respects, would take place throughout all Europe. For the present, however, we must be content with anticipation.
