SALEM, May 31.

On Saturday last Mr. John Hubbard, of Ipswich, put an end to his life by hanging himself, with a cord, to the limb of a tree in his pasture, where he was found in about an hour after he had been seen to go from his house.- He sustained the character of a man of strict integrity and virtue, was exemplary in his life, and a useful member of society. He served the town many years as a Selectman. In his nearest connections he was remarkably kind and affectionate. For some months past, he frequently mentioned his being in great distress of mind, both with respect to his temporal and spiritual interests, and had repeatedly discovered evident marks of insanity. About a week since, a particular friend, suspecting he had thoughts of such an act of violence, pressed him to confess it, which he did, though with great reluctance. He said, the temptation, at times, was so powerful, that it was with the greatest difficulty he had overcome it: and observed, that he had afterwards felt the greatest joy and satisfaction that he had not been left to perpetrate the horrid act. As he then felt much more composed than he had done, he expressed the strongest hopes that he should have firmness of mind to withstand such a temptation in future.

The jury of inquest agreed, in their verdict, that he was insane. The distress and grief of his wife and eight children (one of his sons a student at the university at Cambridge) occasioned by this shocking event, are inexpressible.
