This Congress will and should provide Federal aid for improved health facilities and medical services. There is no possibility that Congress will adopt any socialistic principle of making the doctors employees of the government.
Officials of the American Medical Association know this. They should know also that their Association has failed utterly to take steps to provide low cost improved health facilities for our people. Some smart operators in the American Medical Association decided to frighten its membership with scare words, "Socialized Medicine" and at the same time to pry a twenty-five dollar assessment from each doctor. This for the alleged purpose of raising a war chest of millions of dollars to combat "socialized medicine." Doctors are being victimized.
Some members in authority in the American Medical Association will no doubt profiteer and Washington lawyers and lobbyists will become greatly enriched. The American Medical Association reported total expenditures of $1,250,000 for lobbying during 1949.
