We last evening received a letter from the Eastward, from a friend, in whose veracity we have the most perfect confidence, stating that JEREMIAH CLARKE, of Old-York, had been arrested by the Marshal of the District of Maine, on Saturday last, and committed to close gaol, not being able to find security, even for his appearance at court. The sum he has taken on his own risk, is stated at THIRTY ONE THOUSAND FIVE HUNDRED DOLLARS, of which it is doubted whether the government will ever receive a cent, he has so well arranged his affairs for the event. This man was made Collector for York, by Mr. Jefferson, and in about a year and a half, even in that small port, managed to "collect" and embezzle the above sum.
