Caucus Meeting Held Saturday
Local Women Assemble For Discussion; To Talk Project At Aldermen Meet Tuesday
Foreseeing a quick signature of President Roosevelt approving the $250,000,000 emergency relief appropriation, which was signed Tuesday, women of Marion assembled Saturday afternoon for a caucus meeting at the home of Mrs. Albert Blanton, on View Point Drive, to discuss and to make definite plans for the provision of a swimming pool here.
It was decided that those present at the caucus and any others who are enthusiastic toward this local swimming pool project will appear before the Board of Aldermen Tuesday night, March 8, and present the objectives.
The necessity of a swimming pool and means toward securing funds to finance its construction were discussed at the caucus meeting and enthusiasm was all in evidence toward a favorable outcome.
For many months this project has been vaguely deliberated but nothing definite has resulted. With the approval of the relief fund and more money being released from Washington in WPA projects the women foresaw the opportunity of securing an allotment here for the swimming pool in the near future, it is reported.
Construction of a pool in the locality near the Community Building has often been suggested. No definite plans were made at the meeting last Saturday pertinent to the location or the size of the pool. These arrangements will be discussed at the Board of Aldermen meeting, announced those pushing the project.
General attitude of citizens of Marion has been favorable for construction of a swimming pool here and since funds have been limited previously, no complete arrangements could be made toward receiving aid from the government, but now with the tremendous release of funds for allocation of money for projects in this country, hopes scintillate favorably toward receiving an allotment here, several Marion citizens have said.
Mayor H. H. Tate, who has delved into WPA projects for Marion heretofore, explained that when the project was discussed vaguely previously, it was talked that the city would need to furnish $10,000 and the government around $20,000 for construction of a type of pool then planned.
At present no particular type or size of pool has been suggested. The amount of money to be appropriated has not been determined. These matters will be taken up at the aldermen meeting on Tuesday night.
Mayor Tate explained that the success of the pool project depended and hung on the outcome of the Board of Aldermen meeting.
At the caucus meeting held last Saturday afternoon at Mrs. Blanton's home informal discussion resulted. All women present gave viewpoints and suggestions. Those present were Mrs. Albert Blanton, Mrs. Homer Beaman, Mrs. S. R. Cross, Mrs. R. B. Crisp, Mrs. G. B. Justice, Mrs. Zeno Martin, Mrs. John Poteat, Mrs. Robert Proctor, and Mrs. Ralph Alexander.
