THE ENGLISH RIOT.

Comments of the Morning's Papers on the Scene-The Event Generally Deplored.

London, Oct. 14.

The morning papers contain columns of descriptions of the scene of the Birmingham riot last evening.

Referring to the affair editorially, the Telegraph says, that the men of Birmingham have disgraced themselves. They have repulsed their opponents by brutality, not by reason. Even the ordinary British spirit of fairness was wanting. The occurrence was shameful.

The Daily News says: Every one must regret the event. We are not surprised that such things should grow out of the existing state of affairs, still we sincerely deplore the exhibition of violence and cannot defend the people of Birmingham.

The Standard sneers with contempt at the idea that the riot has any political significance and declines to believe that it was more than a prearranged affair.

The Times records with regret such riotous and unwarrantable attempt to abridge the right of a meeting for public discussion, a right always held sacred in England. It considers the event a disgrace to English politics.

The damage to Aston grounds in Birmingham from the attack of the liberals upon the conservatives' meeting, are heavy. The conservatives propose to prosecute the liberal leader on charge of inciting a riot.

The hall looks as if it had suffered from a dynamite explosion. Refreshment bars were looted and liquors drunk and bottles thrown on the floors. The gas fittings were wrenched from the walls and gardens and flower beds destroyed.
