"CUSSING" GOVERNOR WALKER
You can "cuss" Gov. Walker all you want to, but he is making a good Governor. He is to be congratulated upon his law enforcement program and should have the united support of every law-abiding citizen.—Cairo Messenger.
"Cussing" Governor Walker is a thing of the past, Herbert.—Butler Herald.
It should be a thing of the past, but it isn't. Cliff Walker took office immediately following a soda pop executive and has cleaned out lots of things that had a peculiarly bad odor. His enemies are picking on him and will continue to do so. They think they have something large in the anti-Klan coloring they are giving their antagonism, but none of us would ever hear their squawk against the Klan did they not have such an appetite for public office into which Cliff Walker cannot put them because there are no more public offices to fill.
The governor does not designate us to do his newspaper quarreling. He has not asked us to defend his beliefs in the Ku Klux Klan. Nor do we expect any such thing from him. We do not believe in the hood and the mask for something which we want to do but in the open with our hands on the table where everybody can see them. That's our idea of the Klan—just our idea of it. Others see it in a different light and are running it to suit themselves. So long as they remain within the law we are not going to make any more row about the Ku Klux Klan. We do not intend to take the vows, but those who have different views about it have our permission—to do as they please.
Cussing Cliff Walker about the Klan is little stuff. Spending time squawking about the Klan is simply lost time and the man who has nothing else to do ought to be haled before the courts for vagrancy. But then some of our Underwood newspaper buddies take their statesmanship so seriously—it is hard to travel in peace and good order, much less with dignity.
