NEW YORK-(ANP)- Hundreds of Negro families who were made homeless by the devastating floods following Hurricane Diane were promised aid this week by the American Red Cross.
The worst flood in the country's history forced the closing of St. Phillips Church camp at Great Neck, Pa. Some 90 children were returned to their homes after flood waters forced them to abandon the camp site.
Camp Minisink, conducted by the New York City Mission, was also hard hit. Port Jervis suffered the brunt of the heavy rains and, at one time, the city of 10,000 was under water.
E. Roland Harriman, chairman of the National Red Cross, conferred with President Eisenhower, who rushed from Denver to survey the flood situation and ask for emergency relief.
The Red Cross has set up disaster headquarters in New York and has issued an appeal for emergency funds to provide temporary shelter and medical aid to scores of thousands left destitute by the flood.
In a wire to chapter chairmen, Harriman said "I fully realize that to accomplish our purpose, we must jointly and severally work hard on our disaster fund drive.
"The need is great, our chapters in the disaster area and field staff are doing us proud to meet that need."
