Athens Convention.

Pursuant to a call previously published the Republicans of the Sixth Senatorial District assembled in convention at the court house in Athens, September 14th, 1872, for the purpose of nominating a candidate for the State Senate.

On motion T. J. Mason, of Loudon, was elected Chairman and W. Gettys elected Secretary. A committee of five on credentials was appointed, consisting of Andrews, W. S. McGaughey, W. L. Hicks, J. M. Alexander and M. L. Philips. During the retirement of the committee Hon. Geo. W. Bridges addressed the convention.

The committee reported the following counties entitled to representation in the convention, with the number of votes of each: Loudon, 12; Monroe, 12; McMinn, 15; Bradley, 12; Polk, 6; Meigs, 6.

Judge Bridges moved that J. C. Morgan, of Cleveland, Bradley county, be nominated as the candidate for the Senate by acclamation, which motion was carried without a dissenting vote. Mr. Morgan being called on appeared, and thanking the convention for the honor conferred upon him, accepted the nomination and said that he would meet the people on some future occasion to discuss the political issues of the day, and to advocate and defend the principles of the great Republican party, of which he was proud of being a member.

At the conclusion of Mr. Morgan's speech, the convention heartily endorsed the action of the Chattanooga Republican Convention, in nominating Wm. Crutchfield for Congress.

On motion, the Knoxville Chronicle and Loudon Star were requested to publish the proceedings of this convention.

The convention then adjourned sine die.

T. J. MASON, Chairman.

W. GETTYS, Secretary.
