Full Text

We can hardly believe our senses when we read that the Committee of Ways and Means yesterday concluded, by a vote of five against four, to remove the duty on coal. So plain an act of justice—so necessary a concession to the needs of the poor—so proper a sequel to the righteous combination for high prices of last season—could hardly be looked for at the hands of a committee or a House whose sole afflatus has been to be the breezes of Pennsylvania.

Even now we have an intimation that Mr. Maynard is likely to change his vote, and go for the rescue of the monopolists against the salvation of the people. The vote in committee was as follows: In favor abolishing the duty; Hooper, Allison, Brooks, Maynard, and Marshall. Against: Kelley, McCarthy, Blair, and Schenck.—Chicago Post.

No wonder you cannot believe your senses—such acts of justice—so necessary to the needs of the poor—so proper a sequel to Radical unrighteousness are not to be expected from a Radical, unscrupulous, thieving Congress or any of its committees.
