IMPORTANT FROM THE EAST
The following is the most authentick information of the movements of the British squadron, late in the Penobscot, received since our last :--
On Sunday, the 19th instant, the enemy's force in Castine consisted of the Baterk 76, a frigate, a brig and 14 transports, with about 2200 troops, belonging to the 29th, 60th and 98th regiments. On the same day they were reinforced by a tender and a large transport from Machias, with some troops belonging to the 29th. On the 20th they were joined by two more ships. On Wednesday, the 21st, the 60th regiment and the foreign riflemen, &c. 1200 in all, embarked and fell down the river, after taking all the horses and provisions they could put in requisition. And on Friday last a squadron of one 74, six ships and two brigs, were seen leaving Penobscot Bay, and after leaving the land, steered S. S. W.
The above particulars are interesting. As the winds have prevailed since Friday, this squadron, if destined to any part of New-England, must have arrived many hours since; and if its course is correctly stated, and the squadron kept it, they were probably bound to the Chesapeake, which they must have reached by this time.
