Full Text

Boston, Nov. 15. On Saturday Evening last, a few moments after 8 o'clock, the alarm of fire was given, and before any considerable number of people could be assembled, one of the Rope-Walks, at the bottom of the Common, was found to be so far enveloped in flames, as to defy any human exertion, in immediately extinguishing it.-- The wind being high, and blowing from the N. N. W. spread the flames and smoke directly towards the open space, or front of the buildings, where alone any practicable exertions could be made to stop the conflagration, in its southern progress. The range of Walks, which were contiguous to each other, consisted of five, three of which were totally consumed, together with the principal part of their valuable contents, both of hemp and cordage They were occupied by Messrs. Henry Chapman & Co. Samuel Emmons, and Edward Adams. Messrs. Chapman & Co. are presumed to have lost from 15 to 20,000 dollars. Messrs. Emmons, and Adams, have lost every thing they possessed, by this unfortunate occurrence. The Walk, occupied by the latter gentlemen, was believed, owned by Mr. Penuel B. Rogers. The western outer Walk, owned and occupied by Mr. Joseph N. Howe, and the eastern outer Walk, just rebuilt by Messrs. Winslow Lewis & Co. were preserved, through the persevering spirit and intrepidity of the citizens. who, from the local situation of the buildings, though surrounded by fire and smoke, had some space to work in, which was not the case. as it regarded the three interior walks consumed. The damage, sustained by the Messrs. Lewis's, will probably not exceed $1000.
