Full Text

The Dying Artist and his Wife.

Raised on his couch the dying painter lay,
Touching with the strange glory of his art
The picture loveliest to his eye and heart
When she, the partner of his life long day,
Bent over him in tears,—stay, dearest stay,
With answering look, artist and husband said,
Right where thou standest now beside my bed,
Till that sweet face this trembling hand portray;
Beloved Kate, O, ever unto me,
Since first I knew thee and had hope to win,
Hast thou a blessed, blessed angel been,
My life, my love, my joy, all, all in thee;—
Her gaze still on him fixed, he caught its grace,
His last best work, that true wife's tearful face.
