A good specimen of the gaping propensity, that prevails among a great part of our population, may now be seen at any hour of the day, in Spruce st., between Sixth and Seventh. The corporation of the Holy Trinity Church lately recovered four inches and a half of ground, in an action against Mr Stephen Kingston, who, it seems, in building a house which he has lately finished, placed his wall on their ground: and not, as we are informed, without previous notice of their claim. Legal possession having been given by the Sheriff to the Plaintiffs, their workmen are now employed in taking down the trespassing portion of the wall—one half of its whole thickness. They seem to be doing the work with great accuracy & skill; feeling, no doubt, that their reputations are at a stake, as their operations attract as much notice as if each of them were a Palladio. The opposite pavement was crowded by gazers the greater part of yesterday: there being seldom less than twenty or thirty collected, and sometimes double that number. The red flag that hangs out of the third story window of the house, with the placards posted by its owner in the neighborhood, cannot fail to attract the attention of all who happen to pass near the spot.—Chron.
