General Post Office.—The corner stone of the new edifice intended for the General Post Office, on Seventh and E. streets, Washington, was laid on the 25th ult., in presence of the President and heads of Departments.

Upon a plate, affixed to the corner stone, was the following inscription: General Post Office United States. Founded 1775. Building destroyed by fire 1836. Rebuilt fire-proof 1839—together with the names of the chief officers of government, at the time of rebuilding the edifice.—ib.
