The robbery of the Roboreus from this port, on her passage to New-Orleans, is still recent in our recollection. It was used as a political machine to excite the detestation of our citizens against the French government. How far the agents of that government in the West Indies have justified that robbery, the following information, received in a letter from a gentleman in Philadelphia, just arrived from St Domingo, will shew.
We could wish to be enabled to present our readers with similar traits of friendship from the British; but alas, the hope is vain.
Extract from a letter written by a gentleman from the City of Santo Domingo.
"I have lately arrived from Santo Domingo--during my stay in that city, the papers of the ship Roborens came to hand, for the purpose of having her cargo condemned; the general (Ferrand) sent for me to know the state of the property, and after a little conversation on the subject, directed me to inform the owners that he would order the french agent in Cuba to arrest all the property, sold or not sold, and to hold it in the name of the government until claimed by the proper owners. Both privateers are ordered to be arrested, their commissions to be returned, and the captains imprisoned; the general is much displeased with the conduct of the privateersmen."
