VANCOUVER, B.C., (AP) The pioneers who carved out a rich history in the frozen northland are heading for the scene of another gold rush today.
Remnants of the hordes who trekked north in search of a golden fortune, who "Cremated Sam McGee" and made sourdough pancakes on the winter trail are enroute to California and the 24th reunion of the International Sourdoughs Association Aug. 18-21.
About 1,500 members of the association are expected at Eureka, Calif., supply center of the California gold fields when the gold fever was sweeping that state.
Thomas A. Lamb of Vancouver, B. C., International's president, heads a delegation from British Columbia.
Premier Bennett of British Columbia said: "The current activity in the northland is a tribute to your hardy enterprise . . . your reunion symbolizing a true universal brotherhood."
Few of the originals from the "Trail of '98" will be around to take part in the reunion. But modern day sourdoughs, and others who roamed the north early in the century are happy to swap tales and recount exploits.
A sourdough may never have panned for gold, or climbed the Chilkoot Pass, but at some time he must have watched the freeze-up on the Yukon River—and remained to watch it crumble in the spring.
