THE DEPOSITES.
If there should be any doubts upon the subject, we intend to satisfy our readers that the Removal of the Deposites from the U. S. Bank was not, and is not, the necessary cause of a pressure in the money market. The Bank had been curtailing its circulation for some time before the removal, merely for the purpose of oppressing our citizens, and extorting from them a public expression in its favor. In order to meet and relieve that pressure, Gen. Jackson desired the deposites removed to the State Banks, that they might make larger issues to supply the vacuum occasioned by the merciless course of Nicholas Biddle. The United States' Bank has an abundance of specie, and can with more safety than ever, furnish the necessary wants of the community. Nothing but the malignant feelings of Nicholas Biddle prevents it; and to gratify his personal malice, we see intelligent men (for they know better) exerting themselves to restore the Deposites, when it is self-evident, that the U. States Bank does not need them.
Should they be ordered back, they must be again removed at the end of two years—when that Bank can again produce the same train of evils. We repeat, it is only to oppose our fearless, honest, and patriotic President, and to gratify the inordinate and wicked passions of a heartless man, that all this hue and cry is raised.—Nicholas Biddle knows full well, that if the deposites are restored, it will be the first step towards renewing the U. States' Bank. Let him but accomplish that object, and our liberties are at an end.
Jacksonians—Democrats—friends of your country! cling to your Constitution and your President—sustain and support the man of your choice—and you will not be disappointed. Enable him to steer our bark through the storm raised by political opposers, Bankites, Clayites and Nullifiers, and the Republic is safe.
