The opposition spoilsmen and their strikers
sent up a dismal howl of persecution when,
in the commencement of the present contest
the Democrat stated some good reasons why
Col. Tompkins should be defeated. The rose
water gentry could not endure anything of a
personal character. The Express has never
ceased to denounce as miserable Broderick
Republican bolters those who chose to stay
with Douglas in his noble defense of Demo-
cratic principles, when he fought James Bu-
chanan, the arch enemy of true Democracy
and conquered him.
In the Express of yesterday a wretched at-
tempt is made to belittle a man who is the
soul of honor, and whose official record, as
Tax Collector of this county, is as clear as
that of any man who was ever called to serve
the People. The statement that he whined
for a nomination to the office which he now
holds is sufficiently refuted by stating the
truth, to-wit: he received seventy votes on
the first ballot, in a convention composed of
ninety-eight delegates, and his nomination
was, on election day, endorsed by an over-
whelming majority over John Sterritt, one of
the best men in Yuba county.
The Express must first find some flaw in
Mr. Moore's integrity before they can, with
any prejudice to him, spit their noisome
venom upon him.
We might ask whether the burly County
Recorder, and the dignified and well dressed
Sheriff have not been opposing with all their
might, this spring, men who helped to elect
them to the fat places they hold.
