Russia—According to the official accounts of the births and deaths in the Russian empire, it appears that in the course of the last year a great many persons died who had attained a remarkably high age. The number of births were 2,333,902; deaths, 1,563,733; excess of births, 770,259; marriages, 494,424.

Among the deaths there were of persons from 100 to 105 years, 858; 110 to 115, 125; 116 to 120, 130; 120 to 130, 3; of 145 years, 1; from 150 to 156, 3; of 160 years, 1; of 166 years, 1. The provinces on both sides of the Caucasus (Caucasia and Transcaucasia) are not included. According to the report of the finance department, the population of the Russian empire in 1838 was 60,000,000.
