Full Text

The army public relations department sent detailed information about Corporal Ernest E. Zinn receiving the Silver Star for gallantry in action. He was awarded for gallantry in action while fighting with the Fifth Army's third "Marne" division in the Anzio sector in Italy.

During a sharp battle Corporal Zinn laid more than two miles of heavy wire from his regimental headquarters to a battalion command post in daylight over flat and open terrain, with artillery shells bursting within 10 yards of him and bullets from enemy snipers and machine guns hitting the ground within inches of him. His accomplishment of this deed, after two men attempting to lay the same line had been severely wounded, enabled the battalion to call for friendly artillery fire in time to smash a German counterattack and to hold its newly won positions. His wife, the former Betty Ware, and his mother, Mrs. Della M. Zinn, both live in El Centro.
