No more baskets are being bought for the Tribal rodeo at the end of this month as the $1,000 set aside by the Tribal Council for the purchase of baskets has been spent.
About 400 baskets have been bought for the rodeo since April. The tribe hopes to make at least 20 per cent on its investment. Volunteers will handle the sales in the Tribal Courtroom from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. both days.
Sophie Stevens of Big Fields will demonstrate basket making from 11-1 and 3 to 5 each day.
Lolita Manuel, member of the Papago Self-Help program, will also be on hand to answer questions by visitors. Both women are being paid for their time.
Good baskets are wanted for Tucson and other markets. Unusually good items--including wastebaskets, owls, dogs, cats, and willow baskets--may be sold to either Mrs. Manuel or Harry Marcus.
A number of better baskets have been set aside to be sent to the State Fair next month. An annual order from New Jersey is also being filled.
