DISASTER.—We find the following paragraph among the ship news of the Boston papers of Monday. It is feared that Mr. Eber Hovey of this town was the mate alluded to and is lost, yet from the wording of the paragraph we are left in doubt.—Bradford Gazette.

Steamer Independence recently wrecked in Matagorda Bay, was a new vessel built at Hoboken last winter, and is largely insured in Boston. The cargo was valued at $50,000 and will prove a total loss. She had a large number of passengers, 120 of whom were saved, but the following were lost while attempting to reach the shore in a boat—Mrs. Minott and three children, Mrs. Lieut. Jones, the Chief Mate, Mrs. Hovey.
