Full Text

THE COQUETTE.

She pluck'd the red rose, blushing near,
And gave it him, with winning smile
That only could the gift endear:
It told of love, but did beguile,
And briefly is his story told,-
He dreams of her enchanting tulips,
His visions blissful scenes unfold,
As piquant as are Clayton's juleps;
But soon she heeds no more his sigh,
The legacy of cherished hope;
She's gay as any butterfly
Till, one by one, her lovers slope;
When, after lavishing her smiles
Upon a crowd, the silly belle,
Who ev'ry lover thus beguiles,
Leads, disappointed, apes in hell. L.
