The new elementary school was dedicated and open house was held on Sunday, November 20, 1955, 3:00 p.m. under the new principal, who was recently acquired, Marcellus Whitehead, a graduate of Howard and New York Universities.
The principal speaker for the occasion was J. O. Williams, Itinerant Teacher-Trainer, Fort Valley State College, in the Department of Agriculture. Mr. Williams was accompanied by Mrs. J. O. Williams and other friends. He spoke on the subject, "Indebtedness of Society to the School."
Others on the program were H T. Daniel, Pike County superintendent of schools and all members of the Board of Education of Pike County.
E. D. Engram, assistant principal, presided with the principal, Marcellus Whitehead, introducing the speakers.
Mrs. JoAnn Parks, Jeanes supervisor of Pike and Lamar counties, introduced the out-of-town visitors and guests.
The building was decorated with a vast display of complimentary flowers. Refreshments were served. Visitors from Forsyth, Macon, Jackson, Griffin, Fort Valley, Vienna and several other cities were present.
