CAMP DAVIS, N. C.-(ANP)-
The distinction of being the first anti-aircraft regiment to undertake the actual firing of the three-inch anti-aircraft guns went to the 100th Coast Artillery regiment here Nov. 3.
Although they were the last of anti-aircraft regiments to receive their artillery, they were first to begin actual firing problems.
Negro artillery regiments constitute about one-fourth of the troops stationed at this anti-aircraft artillery center.
Under the supervision of Sgt. Cutts, gun commander of the first crew to fire, Battery B arrived at Sears landing, the firing point, and began firing about 11 a. m.
Inspecting operations were Col. R. D. Brown, commanding the 19th Coast Artillery Training group, which consists of the 99th and the 100th; Lt. Col. James D. McMullen, commanding the 100th; and other regimental and battery officers.
The 19th Coast Artillery Training group was organized last spring and has consistently made rapid progress in training under Col. Brown's leadership.
The physical condition of the men has reached a stage where a 25-mile hike on a single day is a routine operation.
