The Last Thoughts of Clarkson.

Under this head the Inquirer of the 17th inst. publishes the paper confided to the hands of Mr. Garrison, shortly before his death. It is entitled "Hints for the American People in the event of a Dissolution of the Union,' and is, as Mr. Thompson stated on Saturday, in entire accordance with Mr. Garrison's views. The institution of slavery, says the deceased philanthropist, has given birth in America to notions and opinions leading to downright atheism. The Bible has been falsified to suit the purposes of slaveholders. It has been denied that God made of one blood all nations of the earth to dwell therein. The notion has been inculcated that there are different races of men, springing from different stocks, and that the negroes are an inferior race--a link between man and brute-and may be classed with property, as cattle, sheep, and even inanimate things." The clergy have encouraged this perversion of the Scriptures to please the planters, and glossed over the horrors of the slave system; and not only has the public mind been corrupted and demoralized on the subject of slavery, but the standard of morals generally has been lowered by Bible perversion. The very air of the country has become infected with infidelity and atheism.- The free States, which are involved in the maintenance of slavery, and tainted by the connection: and Mr. Clarkson comes to the conclusion that a division of the Union is desirable, and should be demanded. Thus, then, the "last thoughts' of the great abolitionist justify the policy of the American Anti-Slavery Society, and come to the same conclusion as Mr. Garrison in regard to the religion' of the slaveholders and their abettors.
