THIS N' THAT
By Hazel Underwood
Friendless Souls
If you and I tonight could say
We helped a friendless soul today,
How different the world might be
Because of such as you and me.
For kindness is indeed sublime
And worth the trouble anytime,
Sincerity is all we need
To help us do a kindly deed.
For instance, just a word of praise
Is pacifying nowadays.
An honest smile, a sincere thought
Are treasures when they come unsought
To those in need too proud to say
They need a helping hand today.
Come, let us in our hearts relent.
For tender hearts are eloquent.
They speak a language so refined
It purifies the selfish mind.
So that the jobless mortal may
Receive his morsel day by day.
A cup of kindness sweet and good
The sentiment of brotherhood,
A word of cheer, a helping hand
To make him feel and understand
That though he's proud and poor indeed,
We're with him in his hour of need
For isn't all the world akin
And should be worthwhile living in?—Selected
Anon from Mark Tyne's Scrap Book. (Thanks to Mrs. William Moden).
