New-Bedford, 5th mo. 13, 1834.

Mr. Editor—The period is fast approaching when each and every colored freeman is expected to do his duty.

Sir, it is well known that the genius and spirit of all governmental politics are such that the power of redressing public grievances is vested in the people the acknowledged sovereigns; and when any of that people shall become honestly convinced that slavery, Colonization, and the deprivation of a moral and intellectual improvement tend to tyranny and anti-republicanism, it is their right, it is their duty, as friends to their fellow brethren (in bonds, as well as the free) and their country, to take a manly, a decided, and an inflexible stand against such usurpations—to express the sentiments of their minds freely, willingly and fearlessly, and to give publicity to the motives by which they are actuated, and to put in requisition all fair and honorable means in furtherance of their objects.

And in order more fully to accomplish the above principles, the New-Bedford Union Society, auxiliary to the General Convention, have chosen their venerable friend and brother, Richard Johnson, representative to the fourth Annual Convention. And by a vote of the Society, I am requested to crave the favor of your giving this an insertion in your esteemed journal, the Liberator.

Sir, I am, with respect, your humble serv't,

WM. P. POWELL. Cor. Sec. of the New-Bedford Union Society, Auxiliary to the General Convention.
