Renumbering the Houses.
It is evident from the interviews in the Morning News that the proposition to renumber the houses of the city is a very popular one. The merchants favor it and no doubt the great majority of the householders do.
The cost to the city would be nothing. The house owners would have to stand the expense, which would be light. The benefits of the improvement would be very great. What these benefits are have already been pointed out.
As the city will not have to foot the bill there is no reason why the improvement should not be made at once. Nothing is to be gained by delay. A house owner can as well pay 22 or 25 cents, or whatever sum may be agreed upon, now as next winter.
But the greatest care should be exercised in selecting a plan and in having the work well done. It has not been very long since the houses were renumbered, and now it is imperatively necessary that the work shall be done over again. Too much of the public work is done in a wholly unsatisfactory manner, thus imposing a double burden upon the taxpayers. The first thing to be done in this matter of renumbering the houses is to decide which is the best plan. Having selected a plan the work should be let to a responsible party, and a guarantee required of him that he will do it in accordance with the specifications.
