Full Text
Mr. Samuel Phillips Newman, a gentleman of very respectable endowments, and as we believe, sincerely devoted to the interests of religion, was elected, unanimously both by the Trustees and Overseers, Professor of Languages.
To every lover of good learning and of Christian truth it must be highly gratifying to observe the high rank, which Bowdoin College has already attained among the literary institutions of our country. Though yet in its infancy, it affords advantages not inferior to those of older and richer seminaries. It enjoys the instruction of a Professor, whose name is extensively known, and whose literary merits are highly appreciated, not only in this country but in Europe; and for many years it has been blest with the counsels, prayers and labors of a President, whom to know is to love and venerate. Most deeply and universally is his illness regretted. It cast a gloom over the late anniversary, which all the pleasing exhibitions and flattering prospects of the day could not dissipate. We do not abandon the hope, that a gracious God, in answer to the fervent prayers of many hearts, will yet preserve to his family, to the College, and to the community, a life so deservedly dear. But should it be ordered otherwise, we will still indulge the cheering belief that an institution, which hitherto so manifestly has been the care of a kind and watchful Providence, will continue to enjoy his gracious benediction.
