PCA to aid tenants through ward units

A directive to tenants faced with landlords' demands for rent increases came this week from William Miller, director of Progressive Citizens of America. Miller said:

"Tenants must remember this. Landlords cannot raise rents unless tenants agree to the increase. Tenants need have no fear. There is nothing landlords can do, unless tenants voluntarily agree to increases, now or in 1948 when federal controls go off. When these controls expire, state controls will go into effect.

"Landlords cannot evict tenants without a court order. And court orders cannot be obtained, except on very specific grounds."

A panel of legal experts is being set up by PCA in each ward to inform tenants of their legal rights and to provide material on all problems. This service is available not only to PCA members, but to any renters.
