Full Text
One of the greatest difficulties which pedestrians going over the Presidential range have to contend with is the scarcity of water. On the course ordinarily taken no springs are found after leaving the railway track until Clay and Jefferson are crossed and Spaulding's Spring is reached. In the gap between Jefferson and Adams, after a hard tramp of two miles. A spring has lately been found between Mounts Clay and Jefferson, which will afford refreshment at the point where it is most needed. Mr. Edmands, of the Appalachian Club, in a recent trip over Mount Clay, discovered a brook running under the surface, which he thought might be reached by a very thirsty man. Following down its course he found a spring a short distance southwest by the compass from the saddle between Jefferson and Clay. The brook flows down towards Mount Deception and in the direction of Jefferson village. Mr. Edmands put up a large cairn to mark the spot, and started on, thinking that he had made a fresh discovery; but soon found a line of little stone signals showing that the way to the spring had been marked by a previous explorer. This is probably the same spring which Mr. Lowe discovered last year, no account of which has ever been published.
