Mrs Hayes will hardly help Charley Foster out of his temperance muddle.
The slogan cry that she suggests to run the temperance question out of the campaign is alliterative, but nothing more.
"Garfield or Guiteau" sounds well, but it doesn't happen that there is any political division between the friends of Garfield and Guiteau outside of the Republican party. If there was, Foster might whoop things up by ranging himself enthusiastically on Garfield's side. As things go, however, the only way to put the stamp of popular condemnation on Guiteau's crime is to vote down the candidate of the party of which Guiteau is the legitimate product. No sane person can question for a moment that the Republican party and its practices made the assassin Guiteau a possibility, and Charley Foster cannot escape his share of personal responsibility for the crime.
