Full Text

The New York Journal of Commerce, publishes a letter from the city of Mexico, which, it says, is from a distinguished source, and which sets out with this averment:

"Your friend, Mr. Granja, (who arrived here yesterday, the 23d,) has just been to pay me a visit. He comes advocating your own views; he is for entering upon negotiations to establish a peace. Well we can have no objection to a peace, if we can have an honest, a certain one. We are not at war for the pleasure of it. If the United States is not staging it for conquest, certainly we are not on the defensive for—conquest. No: we are wishing to indulge a revel' in no lands' but those legitimately Mexican. We repeat, therefore. Peace is to be had if the United States [citizens and Government] are disposed really and truly to be honestly pacific. That much was stated to the Consul."
