Lunch Counter Victory

(Reprinted from The California Eagle)

Hold up another victory for the sit-down students.

Four national chain stores have decided to drop their color barrier in 112 units in the South.

The most significant aspect of that news is that the owners think they agree that a change is coming over the nation in regard to race relations. They're a little late waking up and realizing that Old Jim Crow is on his dying bed.

It was as this time last year, no self respecting prophet would have risked his honor by predicting that even giant chain store lunch counters would be open to colored customers in the South.

The breakthrough on the lunch counter front is only the beginning of a total revolution that is going to sweep through the South within the next few years. Despite the mind threats of Mississippi, Georgia, Alabama and with North Carolina the time isn't far off when Negro children will be attending public schools in those states.

They have already begun grudging token integration and there is no arguing to accelerate the process.

In short, in the students have it, all the weight of an idea whose time has come.

The time for equality has come and it won't be stayed by the white citizens councils or by politicians of the stripe of Faubus and Talmadge or Sparkman.

There is no denying.
