Oil Stove Blast Destroys Home
A late evening fire destroyed the home of a Westside resident Friday after an oil stove exploded in his kitchen shortly after he lit it to prepare a meal, police said.
The oil stove exploded in the home of a man identified by police as Henry Maddox, 59, of 2026 Morehouse Drive, N. W. Maddox was reportedly not injured in the explosion or the resulting fire.
Police said they arrived on the scene and found the house completely engulfed in flames. They quoted Maddox as saying he lit an oil stove to cook supper when the stove exploded and ignited the entire kitchen area.
Maddox reportedly said he attempted unsuccessfully to extinguish the blaze but that the fire was raging so fast that he called the fire department immediately.
Maddox's house was a complete loss, according to the police, and the intense heat from the blaze slightly singed the outside of the house next to the destroyed Maddox home. The damage to the neighboring house was listed as very small.
