Riot in Pittsburg

Pittsburg has for some time past, been the theatre of very serious riots, headed by females. The boilers and puddlers of the iron founderies of that city have been on a strike for several weeks, for higher wages. The employers refuse to raise the wages, and have filled up their establishment with eastern mechanics, who receive the old prices. This state of affairs has brought the families of the unemployed artisans to great distress and want. On Friday of week before last an attack was made upon one of the founderies by a large number of women, armed with clubs, stones, and other missiles. The proprietors and workmen were driven out, some of them very much injured, and considerable damage was done to the machinery and materials of the establishment. On Saturday morning another attack was made by the same mob upon another establishment, with similar results. The utmost disorder prevailed. The eastern operatives were locked up in the barracks for safety. The militia were called out for the protection of the founderies and the workmen.
