Jan. 24. A letter from Gibraltar states the following melancholy event: Capt. -- was sent to Algiers with positive orders not to go on shore on account of the plague. On his return he brought a packet for General Eliott, not knowing the contents. In this packet was a letter of complaint against himself, charging, that not only he, but his officers, had been on shore. General Eliott sent this letter to the Commodore--the Commodore enclosed it to the Captain, who immediately on the receipt of it retired to his cabin, and discharged a pistol shot through his head.
