Interior Secretary McKay Announces $11½ Million Allotted For Building Of 16 Alaska Public Works Projects

WASHINGTON, (P)- Secretary of the Interior McKay announced today the allotment of more than $11½ million for the construction of 16 public works projects in Alaska and the planning of seven additional projects.

The projects are part of a five-year public works program under which the federal government would put up $70 million dollars.

Local public bodies which sponsor the projects are required to repay half the total construction costs.

The new construction allocations are:

Fairbanks-$169,000 for a sewage trunk line and lift station; $2,000,000 for a new water distribution system, and $600,000 for a new eight-classroom school building.

Ketchikan $236,900 for improvements to the water supply and distribution system and $1,322,000 for street improvements.

Cordova--$793,500 for the construction and equipment of a two-story reinforced concrete or masonry and steel frame school building.

Anchorage- $1,102,000 for the construction and equipping of a 22-classroom concrete school building.

Sitka $662,000 for the construction and equipping of two reinforced concrete additions to the school now under construction.

Seward $951,000 for the construction and equipping of a reinforced concrete and masonry high school facility.

Wasilla-$500,000 for remodeling an existing frame school building and construction and equipping of a two-story reinforced concrete addition.

Kodiak--$600,000 for the construction and equipping of a one-story reinforced concrete, fire resistant frame high school addition to the grade school now under construction.

Other public works in College, Valdez, Turnagain Heights, Lloyd Homes (adjacent to Ketchikan), and Homer.

The advance planning allocations are in Anvik, Fort Yukon, Juneau, College, Skagway, and Anchorage.

The allocations are for such projects as schools, streets, and utilities.
