We mentioned in our last a report that the Major had taken the stump in behalf of Gen. Harrison, and suggested some reasons which had occurred to our minds, as probably operating to induce him to such course. Those, no doubt, have had their weight, but it appears, also, that there are other reasons which had not occurred to us. He has been, since 1836, Minister Extraordinary to Spain, but has recently returned,-our government having, as a matter of economy, reduced the mission to a simple Charge.
It appears, also, that on closing his accounts at the Treasury Department, several items of an unusual character were disallowed, which appear to be set forth in the report of the Secretary of State to Congress in Dec. last. The gross amount of the contingencies mentioned, is $2,677.
The Ohio Statesman of the 16th, published at Columbus, says-"Maj. Eaton made a speech at the dandies Log Cabin last night, which we may notice hereafter. He comes out, a full-blooded Tariff and Bank man, and does not like John C. Calhoun it seems."
There was a time when the Whigs said he could not write plain English; now we suppose he is a good Whig and possesses a full share of "all the talents." Joel Eastman, too, must take back part of his story about Mrs. Eaton which he told in Jefferson Hall. It will make Joel as "squirmy" as if he had been eating "Eel Soup."
