Thirty-Two Years Ago.—From "The Republic." a weekly Journal published here thirty two years ago, we find the following statistics. which, at the same time they evince progression in some things. show retrogression in others. At that day, the writer says there were 257 white families. 14 black, 178 private houses, 10 public buildings, 1 bank, 1 theatre, (the ruins of which have long since disappeared. The substitute for public amusement. is a cock-loft upper story to a market. and a mulish looking one horse (City Hall) 1 jail, (we have two jails in one now : a recent police jury in its wisdom, concluded to imprison the Jailor's family under the same roof that encloses the new inquisitorial establishment.) 1 court house, (a useless establishment, since there are not cases enough to make a court.) 2 Masonic Lodges—none French, 1 Catholic church,2 printing offices, and 45 stores and groceries. By comparison we may see how much the place has improved during the past Quarter of a century.
